PHARMACODYNAMIC PROPERTIES
Piracetam is a psychotropic agent which acts to promote cortical metabolism, increase neuronal defense in hypoxia medium (due to reducing oxygen consumption, maintaining ATP production, GBPD activation but not increasing lactate production). Piracetam also acts on neurotransmitters such as acetylcholine, noradrenalin, dopamine which involve in cognitive process such as memory and learning.
PHARMACOKINETIC PROPERTIES
Piracetam is rapidly and almost completely absorbed from the GI tract. Plasma concentrations are achieved at 2-8 hours in cerebrospinal fluid. Piracetam is not bound to plasma proteins and is excreted primarily by the kidneys as unchanged.
INDICATIONS:
Treatment of cortical insufficiency disorders in conditions such as trauma, surgery, alcoholism, dizziness, stroke or behavioral disorders, dyslexia in children.
Supportive treatment of seizures and memory decline in older people. Protect the cerebral cortex from lack of oxygen.
DOSAGE & ADMINISTRATION
As directed by a physician.
Adults: oral dose of 2 capsules, 2-3 times daily.
Children: oral dose of 1 capsule, 2-3 times daily.
CONTRAINDICATIONS
Hypersensitivity to any of the components of the drug.
Patients with severe kidney failure, liver failure.
Patients suffering from Huntington's Chorea.
PRECAUTIONS
If kidney failure (creatinine clearance less than 60 ml/min) is present, the dose should be reduced or the interval between doses should be far away.
Children should not be taken more than 1200 mg a day.
INTERACTIONS
Increased prothrombin time was observed in patients treated with warfarin prior to piracetam therapy.
PREGNANCY AND LACTATION
Piracetam crosses the placental barrier. Piracetam should be used in pregnant or nursing women if really necessary.
EFFECTS ON ABILITY TO DRIVE AND USE MACHINES
The drug causes no drowsiness and does not affect the possibility of driving and operating machines.
UNDESIRABLE EFFECTS
High doses of piracetam can cause sleep disturbances, scowl, and excitement. Symptoms including nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and stomachache have been rarely reported.
Inform your doctor about any side effects that may occur during the treatment.
OVERDOSE: No additional adverse events specifically related to overdose even at high doses have been reported with piracetam.
SHELF-LIFE: 36 months from the manufacturing date.
STORAGE: Store in cool dry places, protect from direct light.
